Common Issues & Quick Fixes
Problems loading Dogfights, Kuma War 2, and Shootout!?
An issue has been detected with some of our Source-based games, and it's possible the video settings need to be reset to default. To do so, go to this page to run the games in Safe Mode. If you still experience problems, see this section.
• All Kuma Games and game episodes are completely free. We do not install adware, malware, or spyware of any kind.
• If this is your first time choosing to play a map, the download can take up to 20 minutes to complete. Why so long? You're installing all the common assets and files needed to play. Every map you download from now on will install much faster, since you'll then get just the files specific to the episode you've chosen.
• If you click "Play" and nothing happens, or if you see an error message relating to memory or the dynamic link library there are a few things you can do to help determine what's wrong:
- Check that your system specs, specifically your video card capabilities, are up to snuff. Scroll down this page to the section about the game you're trying to play to see the system basic requirements and how to find more information on your video card.
- If your PC and video card meet or exceed the system specs, it's possible you're missing the physics processor files needed to run the games. You can manually download the Ageia Physics Drivers (they're free) by visiting www.ageia.com.
- Often a firewall and/or antivirus program will interfere with a portion of the game installation. You may need to temporarily disable your securities, re-download the game installer, and choose to play an episode before enabling your securities again to ensure the download is not interrupted. (Rest assured that Kuma Games does not install spyware, malware or adware of any kind.)
• "Memory errors" are usually due to insufficient video card models or RAM. To check your video card and memory, right-click anywhere on your computer's main desktop; choose Properties, Settings, Advanced, and click on the Adapter tab at the top. See the specific video card requirements for each game below. *Note that Intel cards, Nvidia LE, and many other integrated or laptop video cards are not sufficient to run Kuma games.
• If you suspect a problem with DirectX, you can diagnose some issues by opening your dxdiag log. On your PC, click the Start button and choose to Run. When the Run window appears, type in the word dxdiag. Click OK. When the dxdiag log opens, click the Display tab to make sure all DirectX functions are "Enabled." Your dxdiag log can also tell you your PC's memory and the RAM on your video card.

What ports do I need to open to run a multiplayer server?
To host a Kuma\War server you need to forward or open ports 60001, 60002 and 13242 UDP in Windows Firewall and in your antivirus program.
My ping is really high. Is there any way to lower it?
Closing out all programs on your PC before connecting to Kuma\War will help keep it as low as possible, but ping is mostly a function of your Internet connection. Check what ping a server is running at before you join. Some servers run at a very low ping. Others are higher, which will elevate the pings of those who play in that server. You can also go into Options and lower your graphics settings, which may speed the game up for you.
I want to disable a weapon when I host a game, but I don't see it on the weapons list.
If you run the most recent version of KumaServer, the option to disable any weapon will be available in Weapon Options. Once you select save, it will add any missing reference to your host.cfg. Then, by going into Kuma\War - Multiplayer - Host Game - Select Weapons, the weapon will be an option to Allow/Disallow.
Another option is to simply delete your host.cfg file and then run Kuma\War - Multiplayer - Host Game. This will regenerate the host.cfg file with default options, which will repopulate the weapon list. *Please note that when you delete the host.cfg file you will have to run Kuma\War and let the host.cfg regenerate before you will be able to use KumaServer again.
When I try to join a server it says I have one game version and the server is running another. How do I get in?
It's possible the server is running a modified map or modded files of some kind. If the server is called "Test" then you've stumbled on a server the Kuma developers are using to test a new mission for release. (By the way, it's really cool!)
I'm running a server but it's not on the multiplayer server list. Why not?
Most likely, your firewall is blocking you from appearing on the server list. Be sure to open or allow ports 60001, 60002, 60003, and 12342, all UDP. Also, be sure to check the "List on Gamespy" box if you're trying to host an Internet game.
I can't connect to multiplayer. Could my firewall be the problem?
Often a problem occurs when your firewall is blocking you from running the Kuma\War application.
To adjust a Microsoft Windows firewall:
- Click "Start."
- Choose "Settings," then "Control Panel."
- Click on "Windows Firewall."
- Select the "Exceptions" tab
- on the "Add Program" button and choose "KumaWar.exe."
- Select "OK" and "OK" again.
- Restart Kuma\War.
If you're running McAfee, that protection requires the firewall to be turned off or configured separately from the virus protection.
Norton firewalls allow opposing "permit" and "block" rules to be set for the same application. If Kuma\War is in both categories, it results in a "block" of the application.
When I try to join a server a message says "local or idf files do not match server."
Most likely the server is running a mission that you haven't downloaded yet. Click on the server name to see the maps that room is running, then check that you've downloaded those maps in your Episode List. If you've downloaded a map the button in your Episode List will read "Play Now," if you need to download the map it will simply say "Play."
This message may also appear if the server is running a modified map or modded files of some kind.
I keep crashing to desktop with an error that says "Kuma\War has encountered a problem and needs to close."
Sometimes this is a matter of bad timing: you're trying to join a game just as the server is changing maps. However, if the problem is repetitive, updating your sound and video drivers may resolve the issue. Also be sure your firewall and/or antivirus program isn't blocking the game application.
I see an error message stating "the memory could not be 'read.'"
Many times this means your video card is not compatible, or does not have enough RAM to run the game. See the System Specs listed above for the list of compatible video cards. You can check out your video card by right clicking anywhere on your computer's main desktop and choosing Properties - Settings - Advanced. Click on the tab at the top that says "Adapter" to see your make, model and memory.
What can I do to make the game run faster?
There are some options you can change to increase your speed in-game:
Resolution - Higher resolutions require faster hardware and more resources.
Bit Depth - The game runs faster in 16-bit mode but looks better using the 32-bit mode.
Anti-Aliasing - Should only be used on faster systems and video cards that support this feature.
View Distance - For slower systems, a LOW setting is recommended.
Detail Objects - Turns off small detail objects like posters, telephones, wall maps, etc, to increase overall speed.
Detail object view distance - Turning fog OFF will increase frame rates on slower systems.
Terrain Shadows - OFF increases speed on slower systems.
Character Shadows - If you have the option available, simple shadows require less system resources than complex shadows.
How do I get new missions?
All Kuma\War episodes can be accessed by clicking the link found just under the Featured Episode image on the Kuma\War page of the Client. Click the yellow text that says "Click here to see the full mission list."
Why won't the movie play?
To view Kuma\War movies, you need to install Apple Quicktime 6.5
When I choose "Options," "Play Mission" or "Multiplayer," Kuma\War crashes.
This happens when a file in Kuma\War has been corrupted. You'll need to re-install Kuma\War from www.kumawar.com. If you've downloaded all the missions, you may want to save your maps first (see below).
I get a traceback error that says "The system cannot find the file specified."
This error is generated when you try to run the game from a non-administrator account. You'll need to follow the steps below to log out of the limited account and log in as the administrator. (NOTE: If you don't know the login and password for the administrator account, please contact your system administrator.)
- Click on the Start button and choose "Shut Down."
- Select log off "username" from the drop down menu, where "username" is the name of the user account that is currently logged in.
- Press Control + Alt + Delete at the login prompt.
- Enter your administrator login name and password in the appropriate fields.
I just installed Kuma\War and an error message reads that I have a "Failed Download Error" due to an undetected problem.
