Fall of Sirte: Gaddafi’s Last Stand

Sirte, Libya, October 20, 2011: Following eight months of intense revolutionary struggle incited by forty-two years of brutality, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was killed by rebel fighters outside of his hometown of Sirte. Within moments of NATO aircraft disabling a convoy of vehicles and cutting off Gaddafi's escape, rebel forces arrived in technicals, eager to discover whether or not their former dictator was among the survivors in the smoldering remains of the convoy. Resistance fighters were met with a hail of gunfire from Gaddafi loyalists, intent on protecting him until the bitter end. Outnumbered and outgunned, these loyalists and Gaddafi himself were driven back to a drainage culvert where months of ferocious civil struggle culminated. Among cheers of victory and celebratory gunfire, a bloodied and wounded Gaddafi was finally caught; later succumbing to the wounds inflicted by those he once ruled.
