Operation Red Dawn
Ad Dwar, Iraq- December 13, 2003: As some 600 soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division and Special Operations move into target areas Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2, they know they're in search of a high-value target. What they don't know is that their subsequent capture will end within hours-and conclude the largest manhunt in Iraq.
Saddam Hussein, "caught like a rat," in the words of Maj. Gen. Raymond Odierno, doesn't have a lot of options from the depths of his 6-foot-deep spider hole. He simply raises his hands, declares who he is, and tells the soldiers he wants to negotiate. The peaceful surrender lands Saddam in jail and facing a succession of lengthy trials that highlight raw passages from a life of power and influence, mayhem and murder. Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging for crimes against humanity. His execution was held on December 30, 2006 in the town of Dujail.
