This mission takes us back to one of our favorite missions in Kuma\War, Battle in Sadr City. The urban design was an interesting undertaking for us back in 2004, and 2 years later, it’s every bit as intriguing. But for different reasons.
Sadr City was a totally different map than any we’d modeled before because it had to be narrow and tight, just like the real-world location. Creating an engaging co-op mission in a restricted environment was a challenge, but the arrangement of the enemy AI inside was a success, as we’d hoped. What we didn’t expect was that Battle in Sadr City would be our most popular multiplayer map released to date.
With the Mahdi Army back on the offensive, death squads causing mass casualties, and Sadr City being held hostage to al-Sadr’s men, we knew we had to feature the city as a current battlefield in Iraq. Under normal circumstances it would have been difficult to make a revolutionary map of Sadr City having featured it before, but now we’re working inside a totally new game engine. We think by rendering the city using the updated assets on Source, we’re giving you a more polished, realistic recreation of Sadr City.
